We're making our first trip to Mazatlan this week! Our question is that since there are 4 adults, what is the best way to get from the airport to the Pueblo Bonito Mazatlan? We're wondering about a taxi (is there room?) or arranging some sort of transportation service like a shuttle? In the interest of avoiding the gauntlet of time share folks we figure we'd better get some info. We'd love any recommendations. Happy holidays!

I go to Mazatlan every few years and have enjoyed your web site. I get the impression that you are leaving the area. Why? I will be going down in December 2009 and was wondering what day of the week the Colonia Benito Juarez Mercado Miguel Hidalgo is open. I go to Mexico at least once a year and find Mazatlan to be most enjoyable but to live there all year long, I'm not sure I could handle it.

I just read very nice Bon Voyage to you both in this months Pacific Pearl. I was a bit suprised and am wondering about your decision to relocate. Would you be willing to share your thoughts? I have been hanging out in Mazatlan for a month or so each year since 2003. I initially visited to attend the Centro de Idiomas language school that was (at that time) located on 21 Marso. Your web site (the best I found) was resposible for that intial visit. Gracias y Buenas Suerte

You say this site was "Last updated February 23, 2009" ?? What kind of drugs are you taking? A few gross inaccuracies: "Gas is twice as expensive in Mexico as in the US". Not in your worst nightmare. Not even close. "Trains arriving from the Arizona and California border". Not since the 1980's. "Distance from Nogales to Guaymas is 376 miles". Huh? That would be a trick since it's 297 all the way from Tucson. While it is nice that you put up this site to provide people with some information, it isn't particularly helpful to put up information that was outdated 10 or even 20 years ago. Are you basing the info here on a trip to Mazatlan you took in 1975 or something? None of the issues I mentioned are very difficult to verify.

No real complaints, but I have so enjoyed your website over the past few years. I vicariously imagined myself buying one of the home listed, and guess what...I did it. I am now the proud owner of a home on Lookout Hill...sorry my Spanish needs improvement, and at the moment I can't think of the proper name. I'm looking forward to retirement in your beautiful city within the next couple of years. So, I have a question folks...what are the dates for Carnival in 2010? I'm not sure if I want to come down then, or avoid the whole thing, but I was just wondering. I did attend last year, and it was fun, but not sure if I'm up to it for 2010. So, if anyone knows, I'd appreciate your response. Patty Hall, Santa Cruz, CA...

Hi and I can't thank you enough for having this site. We have surfed the web for months trying to find a reliable website in Mazatlan and besides yours they really do not exsist. My husband and I are coming down to Mazatlan in about 6 days. We were supposed to be down there 3 weeks ago until the media flu hit (otherwise known as the swine flu). My husband is a chef and we would like to meet up with a couple to cook some authentic mexican food. Can you connect us with a couple that would enjoy to do this with us or anyone? We are willing to pay, but not an arm and a leg.

We are planning on leaving for Mazatlan at the end of May and I just happened to come across your site. Thank you very much for all of your insight! I just have one quick question for you or anyone else that has been to your site in the past. Do most of these businesses accept these coupons or do they give you a hard time or anything? They just seem too good to be true! Thanks!

Thank you Henry for your interesting life story. As a young Lieutenant in Germany I was assigned to the 74th Army Postal Unit in Pirmasens Germany which was my first command. I was fortunate enough to work for a SFC Laxen who took very good care of me in 1965 or so. I was selected to be the first Commander of the 15th Base Post Office in kaiserlautern where Sgt Laxen also accompanied me. In late 1966 I was reassigned to the career AG Officers School at Ft Benjamin Harrison and then on to Vietnam for two tours of duty from 1967 through 1969. I never saw Sgt Hermon Laxen again..... Looks like I might have seen you as a little boy... One of my sons is getting ready to go to Veterinary School in September so we share your love of animals. I was searching old military units on the internet wnich I belonged to over the years and came across your article. If I have the wrong Laxen I enjoyed your story anyway... Sincerely Hank Maar

I love your website and can't wait to visit. My husband and I will be in Mazatlan for our 5th anniversary the end of May. I keep hearing in the news that there is a lot of crime in Mexico right now and it is not good for Americans to travel there. They say murders and kidnappings. I thought it was just the USA and Mexico border but my Mother thinks it all over. What do you think? How are things there? I promised my Mother I would ask. I always keep my promises to her. Let me know so I can forward your e-mail to her. Thanks Lisa

I would like to thank you so much for your web site, it was helpful, and you shared so many thing to help us get a enjoinable vacation, and use time wisely. I will tell anyone one the 1st thing you do is take the city tour, so you maybe able to go back and visit places that you would like to spend more time, at the market, on the beach when the fishing boats come back in, the diver was great, we where notin to the jewely stops they made and we wondered, and seen what we wanted to see. We happened to say at the El Cid Marina, pieceful, relaxing. we stayed Jan 21 to the 27. we used the hotel shuttle, and the taxi's to get around. Went to the aquarium, walked the main road, its funny how the people drive so fast, and park on the inside of the road. We visited the local shops, found Mc Donalds, and Applesbees, BugerKing. That was almost the high light of a day. The food was a lit to get use to, but we got thought it.We also stopped on our walk mid after at Senior frogs, where in our 40's and we loved every minute, we where the only ones there, the staff was great they played games, joked around, and we left side stepping, up the stairs at el cid and into the shuttle to the marina. But your site keep me in touch with everything around me, I felt when I got there I knew where every thing was. We also spent one day fishing it was wonderful, we went out on the Aries fleet from the El Cid Marina, we came back with a 9feet stripped blue Marlin, and a MiaMia, which the hotel staff cooked up for us for dinner. Please continue updating and adding to you web site. its great. EJ

Thanks for all the great info. I thought I'd ask you how safe it is to buy meat and produce in the market in the Old City. Also, if you want fresh shrimp, where and when do you go to find it? And lastly, when buying these products is it acceptable to barter? -John

Hi, My family and I have been traveling to Mazatlan for the past 4 years! We have enjoyed every minute of it! We have recently been reading updates on all the violence in Mexico. Has any of this traveled close to Mazatlan? I bring my kids with us every year should I be worried about this? My husband needs a little piece of mind right now due to the fact that I am driving him crazy with worry about this next vacation! Please help me on this info! Thank You Amy

From Nadine and Henry
Dear Amy,

That is a somewhat tricky question. On the one hand, I don't want to say everything will be fine, and then get blamed when you and your entire family are found dismembered. On the other hand, I think you are far more likely to meet your end at the hands of a truck driver than an AK-47 wielding mafioso. I read the Mazatlan local newspaper every day, and as far as I can recall, no tourist, and even no American/Canadian has been killed, or even hurt, in any kind of drug war shootout. I don't think any gringo has ever been kidnapped in Mazatlan, but I am not 100% sure about that. Most tourist deaths or injuries are because they had one to many tequilas and decided that jumping off the third story balcony looked like fun. Nadine and I still live here, and we feel perfectly safe. So, my best advice is if you drink, don't drive. If you smoke, don't bother wearing a seat belt. In other words, come on down and enjoy the sunshine. Hope you have a great trip.
Best wishes,

N and H

My wife Joyce and I will be coming to Mazatlan Jan 17-24 2009. This is our third year in a row of coming to Mazatlan. Last night our temperature was minus 38 degrees F with windchill into the minus 50 degree F range. The 80 degree temp of Mazatlan will be a welcome break. Our first year was focused on tourism, the second relaxation. This year we would like to volunteer and/or give back. Any ideas or names of reputable places to give of ourselves? Also anything nontourism you can suggest for the week would be great. I am sorry I did not ask earlier but only recently found your wonderful site. We will be staying at Costa de Oro and look forward to any advice, information, etc. Thanks for the great site. DR
