Dear Friends,
How wonderful to hear from you again. I hope you have the time to write back and tell me more about your life and what you have been up to. Much has happened in Nadine's and my life. Last year (2024) around March I believe, when we finally sold our house in the marina. All went well with that sale, and we received our money from our "neighbors". With that money in the bank, we should be able to live the rest of our lives in relative comfort.
Ever since we moved from Tijuana to the United States, I have not really been happy. I missed our lives in Mexico, and the summers in Scottsdale Arizona were really miserable. Last year we had three solid months of temperature where the highs were around 48 Celsius. The first summer we were there, we escaped to Guadalajara. Last year we went to Medellin, Colombia, and really liked it there. So much so, that we wound up buying an apartment, and are there as I write this waiting for the remodeling to finish. It isn't as nice as our house in the marina, but it is nice enough, and I believe we will probably die there.
We feel like refugees, escaping from the United States. I feel so sorry for what my country has become. When I was growing up, people believed in fairness, equality, and empathy. Now that has turned into greed, prejudice, and hate. We have a madman in charge who wants to be a king. Isn't that what America was founded upon and revolted against? What has happened? If I was thirty years younger, I might consider staying and fighting against it, but I will turn 71 in a few more weeks, and I just want to live a quiet and tranquil life for the days we have left. Nadine feels exactly the same way I do, and I am grateful every day to have her in my life.
I am grateful to you too, my friends, for your friendship and all the help and support you have given us over the years. Thank you for being a part of our lives.
Here is a map to our (your) new home in Medellin:
We have a nice 3 bedroom apartment, in the best part of town, close to everything. One of our bedrooms will always be available for you, should you decide to pay us a visit. I hope that you do.
Next week (May 16, 2025) I will be attending my 50th college reunion. I still have very fond memories of my time at Caltech, and I look forward to seeing my surviving classmates. All of my professors are either dead or retired, but I feel lucky to have been able to know and learn from them. After that I will visit my childhood friend, Bob, whom I have known since I was in ninth grade, for about a week. We have been "best friends" since I was fourteen years old. That will probably be my last trip to the USA for a long time to come.
Nadine and I plan to explore more of South America now that we are here. I would like to take her to Brazil (Rio) and Argentina (Buenas Aires), but we would also like to visit Chile, Uruguay, and Peru where I have never been before. But that is in the future; first we want to spend some time in our new home getting to know Medellin and perhaps Bogata and Cartagena. Our home came with a Shimmel grand piano, and I hope to learn to play Clair de Lune (an easy version) on it. I played a little bit of piano when I was in high school, (it was very difficult) and I plan to try again soon. In the meantime, I am still studying my mathematics and computer programming, though my memory is not what it used to be.
So that is what has been going on in our lives. We are still in good health, for being of the "third age", and one of the things we really like about Mexico and Latin America in general is that old people are respected rather than ridiculed. Please take our invitation seriously, our door will always be open to you. If we find ourselves back in Mazatlan, we will surely let you know.
Your friends,
Nadine and Henry
