Cocina de Ana: Delicious buffet style lunch that you purchase based on the
weight of the food. Located in the Golden Zone behind Banamex. Believe it or
not, they have some of the best Chinese food in town. I think their Chinese
food days currently are Wednesday and Friday, but these days they also have
Mexican dishes. Average lunch: $3.50-$4 U.S.
Specialty Restaurants
Puravida Juice: If you like healthy, natural food and delicious smoothies,
this is the place for you. They specialize in fresh fruit drinks that are not
watered down. This is a favorite of locals and tourists who happen to stumble
across it. The name means pure life in Spanish, and the food is purely deli-
cious. The sandwich made with pure chicken is excellent. They are just up the
street from the Hotel Playa, on Calle Bugamvilias. They have special prices for
children less than 12 years of age for lunch and breakfast. Overall, their prices
are very reasonable.
El Olivo and Espresso Bar: Is on Gaviotas, behind Sr. Frogs retail clothing
store near the intersection of Camarón Sábalo in the Golden Zone. While they
specialize in natural foods and Espresso, they have a nice variety of American
food including fish, beef and poultry. Many of my friends go there especially
for the bakery products. An air-conditioned dining room is available on those
hot steamy days, or on pleasant mornings you can sit at a sidewalk café table
and enjoy Mocha. Prices are in the moderate range.
Espresso Hour: If you are a lover of gourmet coffee, you have to try this
place that opened in late 2002. The address is Camarón Sábalo #336, across the
street from Bancomer in the Golden Zone. There is both indoor and outdoor
seating. I'm not a big fan of expensive, flavored coffee, but my wife, who is, says
this place is "something special." As a people watcher, I noticed there is a lot of
foot traffic that passes by. They also have pastries, cheesecake, cake, and herbal
tea. Their telephone number is 913-0080.
Rico's Coffee Bar: This is not just another coffee shop. Located on Camarón
Sábalo, across the street from the Inn at Mazatlán, Rico's has Mexican coffee as
good as Starbuck's but at not quite the cost. They have outside seating for
"people watching" while sipping a brew, or an inside library, complete with
magazines and books. Fresh homemade pastry is featured every day. Another
unique feature is that live music is played in the evening Thursday through
Saturday. Telephone them at 913-1444.
Ambrosia: They specialize in a vegetarian menu, but don't be fooled by
appearances. It is located in El Centro area, on Sixto Osuna, about one-half
block from the Plazuela Machado (heading toward the ocean). As you walk in
the front door, it appears to be an ice cream parlor. Inside, to the left are two
