roof is also available. They still feature their famous beef Philly sandwich, but
have "bulked" up their menu. Sandwiches include Italian Sausage, corned beef,
and Rueben, among others--all with choice of onion rings or French fries for
about $4.10 U.S. They also have a variety of pizzas and a special dinner menu
in the evenings. Don't miss this quaint eating establishment. Service seems to
be a bit slow, compared to other places in Mazatlán, but the wait is worth it.
They can be contacted at 913-2082 for delivery service.
Juanita's: A small sidewalk cafe across the street from the Oceana Palace
Hotel on Camarón Sábalo. She specializes in home-style Mexican food. My
favorite is the Special Mexican Plate at $4.50 U.S. They have other American
dishes of fish, shrimp, beef and chicken. Their lunch menu includes a wide
assortment of sandwiches. It has to be good because many beach vendors eat
there. You can have the same comida corrida they eat, but you must ask because
it is not on the menu.
Chayutos: Is charming, with indoor and patio seating, and has excellent
prices. It is located on Azueta #2407, one block from Acquilles Serdan. It is
popular with Mexican families on Sunday afternoon. Tacos, enchiladas, gordi-
tas
, and tostadas with choice of fillings, go for $1.20 to $1.40 each; pozole about
$2; carne asada and BBQ ribs $4.50 (all U.S.).
Taqueria Martin: One of the best and most popular taquerias in town. It is
large, very clean and well maintained. A generously-filled taco with grilled
onions on the side and choice of toppings is $.60 U.S., a Quesadilla $1.20 US,
and orders of carne asada or grilled meat are $3-4 U.S. Fresh tortillas are con-
tinuously baked on the premises. They are located on Calle Najera, across from
Juan Carasco Market, and two blocks east from the Fisherman's Monument.
Las Brochetas: An outdoor café near Office Depot on Rafael Buelna. After
careful consideration, we chose the Rib Eye steaks served with baked potato
and small salad. Absolutely delicious! The baked potato is a meal in itself. Las
Brochetas
is open Tuesday through Sunday, roughly noon till midnight. It is
another of Mazatlán's well-kept secrets.
El Guamuchilito: This is a seafood restaurant, located on Insurgente, and is
very popular with local residents. It offers a varied menu of fresh and well-pre-
pared seafood, including ceviches, zarandeado (grilled fish), tacos and
empanadas, shrimp pate, filets, and seafood cocktails. Prices range from $4 to
$10 U.S. per entrée. It is a warehouse-like space featuring a gray concrete floor,
white plastic Coca-Cola chairs and tables, and steel bars for walls and sliding
doors, but everything is clean and well maintained. There are two locations on
Insurgentes and others located around town. The newest just opened on Najera
across from Taqueria Martin. Contact them by calling 986-6691.
