close around 3 p.m. Bernhard came from northern Germany in about 1996,
and does all the cooking and it is good! Bratwurst, sauerkraut, old-fashioned
meat loaf, German red cabbage and his signature sautéed potatoes (with ham
and onions) are a few of the specialties. There are chicken, fish, meat and egg
dishes, that he prepares both German or Mexican style. The prices are very low,
and portions are large. He also sells take out deli and baked goods.
Jungle Juice: It is on the corner in the heart of the Golden Zone, just west of
Panama Restaurant. I have been going there since 1985. They have everyday
specials of Carne Asada and whole or filet fried fish that includes salad, beans
and rice, tortillas and a pitcher of agua fresca (flavored water of Tamarindo,
Horchata
or Jamaica) for $5 U.S. Also, seven fine breaded shrimp with the
above additions for $6 U.S. Several vegetarian dishes are included in their
menu. They have an all-inclusive breakfast from 8-10 a.m. for $3.20 U.S. Try
the hot cakes. It is a fun place to go with a great atmosphere.
Costa de Oro: Well placed, on the beach side of the Costa de Oro Hotel, in
the Golden Zone, just south of the Inn at Mazatlán. It is one of the few places
where you can eat while enjoying people watching without being bothered by
beach vendors. The outside eating area is about ten yards above the beach. I
order the shrimp omelet for either breakfast or lunch. They also have great
Mexican dishes and the best chilequiles in town.
El Bambu: Sited between Gran Plaza and Sam's Club, about four blocks east
of Valentino's. Menu averages $6-12 U.S. and specializes in charbroiled steaks.
It has both indoor and outdoor seating and a large staff that is willing to cater
to all your needs. Many locals frequent this establishment. I recommend the
house special: charbroiled beef.
Even less expensive--with atmosphere:
Tijuana Grill: A new restaurant across the street from Pueblo Bonito Mazatlán,
on Camarón Sábalo. They have Philly's, Italian Sausage, and other sandwiches for
$3.90 U.S. and include one-half pound of meat and fries or onion rings.
The Place: This quaint little sidewalk café is not only a very inexpensive,
popular place for tourists, but the home of the American Legion in Mazatlán.
They serve wonderful American type meals for breakfast and lunch and spe-
cialize in Mexican food for dinner. They are located on Camarón Sábalo just
north of Oceana Palace Hotel in the Golden Zone. They have a large area in the
rear, with dance floor, bar, and pool table.
Purple Onion: This restaurant, owned jointly by Roy and Howard moved
to a new location on Camarón Sábalo, north of the Oceana Palace Hotel, and
across the street from The Place Restaurant. The Purple Onion has a large rec-
tangular seating area with a bar in the center. Outside seating under a thatched
