Canucks: Formerly known as La Fragata, this beautiful restaurant is locat-
ed on Paseo Clausen, near Angél Flores in Olas Altas. Opened in June 2003 by
two Canadians, Phil and Terri Neville and their partner, Raymundo Caseos
Cano
of Mazatlan, the place can only be described as sensational. There are
two large rooms--the Prairie room is the largest and has a stage to the side of
many tables. Off to one side is the Snowbird lounge which has a pool table, two
TV sets, dartboard, reading area and seats another 50 diners. They have live
entertainment every night except Tuesday and Thursday. They serve an excel-
lent variety of seafood, beef and chicken, with the highest price being shrimp
for about $11 USD. For you Canadians they have what is called Loonie Days
on Monday and Tuesday. Pay your bill in Canadian cash and get an exchange
rate of $10 pesos to the dollar, Aye! Happy hour lasts from 4-8 PM every day
except Sunday. If you can't have fun at Canucks you don't have a pulse. Visit
their website at www.canucksinmaz.com.
China Thai Restaurant With a name like that you would expect Thai and
Chinese food, right? Not! That's just the name, and they serve only Chinese
food, but for you folks that say you can't get good Chinese food in Mazatlán,
you have to check this place out. It opened at the end of 2003 on Rafaél Buelna,
about a hundred meters east of Valentino's, on the south side of the street. It is
relatively small with little atmosphere, but it is new, clean and the food is won-
derful. It is completely ala Carte, so don't expect tea, soup and fortune cookie
with the meal. My wife and companions ordered fish with oyster sauce,
almond chicken, ginger beef, and shrimp chow mein. They were all large por-
tions and delicious. They definitely did not all taste alike, which many have
complained about Chinese food in Mazatlán in general. The price is reason-
able as our meal cost about $6.50 U.S. per person. They have a carry out and
delivery service. Telephone them 986-5728 or 983-2101.
Bolero Restaurant: The address is V. Carranza # 18, just behind the Freeman
Hotel in Olas Altas. Located in a tastefully restored Colonial building, with
works by local artists displayed on the walls, they are open for lunch and din-
ner from 1PM, except closed Sundays. The menu includes steaks, chicken,
shrimp, salads, burgers, sandwiches and a wide variety of Mexican snacks.
They have a complete bar and live music nightly, at a low enough volume that
you can comfortably carry on a conversation. Gracie (Gracia), the personable
owner, or her husband Roberto will probably seat you. They will make you feel
right at home.
Bernard's Restaurant: Is located at Aquiles Serdan #1808, on the second
floor in a mini mall called Toro Manchado, just half a block north of the cen-
tral market. Telephone number is 985-5887. Call to ask about daily lunch spe-
cials. Doors open approximately 10 AM to 10 PM, except Sunday when they
