To help you choose, they make sample dishes and set them by the front door
and put pictures of the dishes on the walls. I'm not a cupcake eater, but my
friends rave about the pastries--and they will bake a cake to order. They serve
excellent French toast. My friend Sherry claims the divorced eggs are to die for.
Another Panama is located in the downtown area, about one block from the
Central Market on Juarez, and one on Ejercito Mexicano near the Multicinemas
at Plaza Las Americas.
Shipwreck: On the ocean side of the Balboa Towers in the Golden Zone, the
view is fabulous. I especially enjoyed the chicken dinner. My friend Connie
recommends their all-inclusive breakfast, which is only about $3.50 U.S.
Villa Italia: It is adjacent to the El Cid complex and right on Camarón
Sábalo. If you like pizza, you'll love their pizza that is baked in a wood-burn-
ing oven. Every time I go in there I promise myself I will try something new,
but I invariably order the pizza with pepperoni and shrimp. They will deliver
to your room or home.
Bahia: This seafood restaurant established in 1950 is located at M. Esobedo
#203, about a block from Olas Altas in the courtyard of an old colonial home.
You are likely to be greeted by Malú, the personable owner. Beautifully pre-
pared seafood, including shrimp, oysters, mahi mahi, snapper, squid and octo-
pus, is cooked to your taste. Try the grilled mahi mahi or their famous ceviche.
Most menu items cost $8 to $13 U.S. and include vegetables, rice and salad.
Contact them at 981-5645.
Copa de Leche: An old favorite facing the ocean at Olas Altas #1220. Indoor
and outdoor seating is available, with friendly service and consistently good
food. A huge shrimp cocktail with a variety of toppings will run you $5.50
U.S., and other scrumptious entrees range from $4.50 to $16 U.S. The popular
"alambre special" (barbecued beef) for two is $13.50 U.S. They are open for
breakfast, lunch and dinner, and can be contacted at 982-5753.
La Puntilla Restaurant: When you tire of the places in the Golden Zone and
Centro, try this place down by the Navy base, fairly close to the old Marina. It
is all outside seating with a beautiful view of the harbor entrance. They spe-
cialize in Mexican food and have an excellent daily buffet. I am a shrimp lover
and found something called a shrimp hamburger. It has no beef, but large
shrimp rolled together with bacon, served on a bun with pickles, lettuce and
tomatoes--outstanding! Occasionally a mariachi band passes through to add
some nice sounds. Telephone them at 982-8877.
Deli28 Centro: This is a small stylish deli located at Belisario Dominguez
#1502, about a block from Plazuela Machado. They specialize in salads, with
sandwiches made from their delicious homemade breads. But the menu offers
pizza, calsones, quiche, soup and more.
