Sábalo, in Golden Zone. They specialize in beef, but have a wide-ranging menu
that includes Mexican dishes, seafood, barbecue ribs, chicken, and pork chops.
I prefer the petite filet mignon with breaded shrimp. It is served with a baked
potato and mixed vegetables. They serve a warmed and spicy refried bean dip
with the tortilla chips that is the best I have ever tasted.
The dining room has a lot of wood including the rails and huge beams in
the ceiling. There is no question that it is a country western motif, and the
waiters all wear Vaquero (cowboy) hats. It is a fun place in which there is coun-
try western and Mexican "canned" music. Every night at 8:00 p.m. there is
dancing to country western music. It can get noisy in the evening, so don't
expect to hold many conversations.
Los Arcos: Located just north of El Cid complex on Camarón Sábalo. My
choice for the best shrimp deals in town. For a change of pace, try the
Hawaiian shrimp. Nice canned music, good service and excellent food. Many
locals eat at Los Arcos.
Ernie Tomato's: In the heart of the Golden Zone, Ernie Tomato's is adjacent
to Sea Shell city. If you like salads, Ernie is the place for you. I tried fried green
tomatoes there for the first time, and now I order them with every meal. The
place is usually crowded with a lively group of customers. I have never been
there when I didn't enjoy the music--and I'm a self-made "fuddy duddy."
Terraza Playa: Is the large patio restaurant that is inside the Hotel Playa
Mazatlán. One of the oldest hotels in the Golden Zone, waiters have been there
for several years. Service is consistently good and the food, even better. Try the
surf and turf, which is jumbo shrimp and juicy filet mignon brought to your
table flaming on a sword. Sunday brunch is a favorite for many of the locals.
There is a fireworks display every Sunday evening.
Casa Loma: I went to Casa Loma the first time several years ago. I didn't
know where it was located, but when the taxi driver started going into a resi-
dential area I became nervous. Off the beaten track, Casa Loma has beautiful
Italian/Spanish style courtyard seating as well as a room with fabulous elegant
Spanish/French décor inside. Each time I'm there I notice Ramon, the manager
going to every table to ask if everything is okay. They have an excellent assort-
ment of food, period. I like the pasta. My wife and I have enjoyed an excellent
meal of sharing a house salad and each ordering tortilla soup. You will experi-
ence a classy dining experience. Although it is on Gaviotas, about four blocks
from Camarón Sábalo in the Golden Zone, I suggest that you take a taxi.
Panama Bakery/Restaurant: Meet your friends for lunch on Camarón
Sábalo, just across from the Las Palmas Hotel in the Golden Zone. Don't try to
go there between 9:00 a.m. to noon on Sunday as the place is usually packed.
They have excellent American breakfasts and delicious Mexican lunch entrees.
